三個十字架

臨近復活節,又有長假期慶祝。慶祝什麼?當然是慶祝復活。但如果你相信復活,要知道它在星期日才發生,之前是受難,所以復活節正名是受難節,我們主要是慶祝受難。為什麼受難要慶祝?神父說是因為有人受難代我們贖了罪,是原罪,即是不關你事但你祖先不聽話卻又入你數。現在犯的罪又如何?唔該你自己解決。

幾十年前復活節前的聖經課,印象很深刻。神父說骷髏山上有三個十字架,和耶穌一齊受死刑的還有兩個凶犯,引述路加23:42,"凶犯說:耶穌,當你來為王時,請你紀念我。耶穌給他說,我實在告訴你:今天你就要與我一同在樂園裏。" 故事的教訓是贖罪不怕遲,信者得救。聖經課不是星期日講道,老師要問學生有什麼問題;當時有一位很精靈的同學,問了一條很精警的問題。他說凶犯做了壞事,到最後卻可上天堂,是否所有壞人都可以臨死說懺悔就成?神父當時的解釋是懺悔要真心,而上帝可以識破假懺悔,而真正的壞人不會真心懺悔。我覺得這個解釋不能接受。壞人終生做盡壞事,如要審判就一定下地獄,但到最後一刻真心懺悔就可上天堂,而今生亦再無機會可以反口再做壞事,這個上天堂的希望一定會使他真心懺悔。但這個邏輯並不成理,就使人懷疑在悖論當中必有騙局。

我起初以為這只是頑皮學生的胡思亂想。但幾十年來,我發覺這個課題千多年來已是有識之士、哲學家、思想家甚至宗教界思考的對象。有很多書籍、哲學思想、小說創作、虛幻故事以此為題材。近年有一套電影魔界行者Constantine,由Keanu Reeves主演,就以此為骨幹。John Constantine有異能,可穿梭陰陽界,故事說他被捲入一個陰謀,是魔鬼根據一個迷信,密謀將地獄帶到人間。陰謀的始作俑者原來是大天使St. Gabriel,他不滿上帝偏袒人類;世間所有生物被視為芻狗,要生就生,要死就死,隨時可以犧牲消耗;但人類卻隨時可以懺悔,任何罪行都可以隨便赦免;於是他密謀讓人間給地獄統治,讓人類經歷極度苦難。他的好意是苦難可洗滌人類,只有倖存者值得上天堂。電影虛構故事當然有好結局,天使的奸計被Constantine破壞。但難保世上還有宗教狂熱者,陷入騙局而使世人受災難;這類真實事件在歷史上已多次出現。

核子災難善後

正如專家所言,核子災難需要很長時間去解決。東電的九個月估計,可能是一廂情願太樂觀的希望。從洩露出來的訊息看,損壞的反應堆在3月11日以來從來沒有人可以進入,因為輻射量太高,所以冷卻系統完全未修復,連看一看都要等機械人出動。現時在做的是從遠處盲目射水,而這些水又成為輻射擴散源頭。在最樂觀的未來三個月,可能更久,輻射污水要不斷地排出海,不能排除還可能再有氫爆,再從大氣散佈輻射物。九個月是估計恢復反應堆冷卻系統所需的時間,可能要足足九個月,可能更久,才可完成,即是九個月內反應堆仍然過熱,有熔毀,爆炸,輻射洩漏出現的機會。

之後反應堆的善後工作才可展開。冷卻系統不停運作才可以保持不過熱,然後要處理核燃料,關閉核電廠。東電自己的樂觀估計是要十年。董事長和社長如果要等做好善後工作才辭職,可能已超過退休年齡,日本政府應即接管東電,開除他們,派政府專責部門人員和核電專家接管。周邊被污染的土地卻不能善後,要等待輻射物自然衰敗,有些輻射物的半衰期是數十年,但要衰敗致無害就要更久,還有較重的輻射物半衰期是數百年。

日本所受的損失很難評估。首先是數千平方公里的土地不能使用,然後是百萬難民要安置,之後輻射後遺症引起的醫療需求增加,漁農業生產減退因為出口需求大幅下滑,旅遊業,航空業,餐飲業都受重大打擊。剛在電視新聞看到日本人在求人購買福島農產品,居酒屋都要求人光顧。在網上卻又看到另一言論,因為日本要重建,財務流動會活躍,是時侯買入日本公司股票。你相信嗎?

東電擬6至9個月內解決核洩

營運福島第一核電廠的東京電力公司首次公布解決核災的時間表,計劃6至9個月內解決。東京電力公司董事長勝俁恒久與社長清水正孝考慮辭職。

第一階段為期3個月,主要處理所有高濃度輻射污水,並防止反應堆發生蒸氣爆炸。
第二階段為期3至6個月,主要恢復反應堆冷卻系統,控制放射物質擴散,將核污染量降至最低。

另外,東電首次派出機械人在3號機組反應堆,量度輻射量、溫度、濕度和氧氣含量等,同時拍攝廠內情況。而為免員工進入核電廠受到高輻射污染,也正研究派出機械人在1號和2號機組進行善後工作。此外,東京電力公司董事長勝俁恒久表示,他與社長清水正孝考慮辭職,將在適當時候公布最終決定。

民主制度並非萬靈藥

北非中東民眾運動令人興奮,使人夢想民主選舉制度可以在此確立。但Lev Grinberg教授提出警告:民主制度並非是萬靈藥,這些國家要面對的政治問題非常多而又很難解決。Lev Grinberg是Bur-Gurion University的政經與社會學系教授。我在Al Jazeera看到他的文章。Al Jazeera的新聞角度和西方國家不同,可以調節一下對世界局勢的偏見。

突尼西亞和埃及的人民成功將國家獨裁者趕走,但這距離國家踏上民主之路還很遙遠,因為這些國家的問題不在其獨裁者,而在一個利益千絲萬縷的政權。最新的消息指出臨時政府仍在壓制人民,稍後的改革和選舉不知結果如何,這些國家的人民仍需很努力。但民眾運動的根源在於貧窮、經濟不平等、宗教和文化的差異,而民主在這裡並非解決辦法。

民主原則起源於工業化資本主義社會,她們的文化同源而經濟分歧相對較少。西方的民主原則和制度是讓中產和工人階層有機會表達訴求,減輕對上層的衝擊而可以和平共處。但如果缺乏一些階層之間互相制衡的力量,又沒有一個統一的國家認同感,民主制度可能令動亂更多。要避免這種情況,就需要根據當地情況在民主選舉上加入憲法,制度和政策的改變。

民主制度內存著危機,每當文化身份認同和經濟地位有系統性連繫時就可能會顯露。這個制度會激化不同文化之間的衝突致產生暴力,原因是它提供了讓大多數人壓迫少數人的合法途徑。為了生存,尊嚴和信仰,小眾群體會選擇暴力對抗,但結果會是被暴力鎮壓。政治社會學家Michael Mann曾指出民主在文化,種族和宗教群體間會產生矛盾,而這個情況在中東有機會出現。

近期的例子是南斯拉夫民主化,其結果是十年內戰然後分裂為七個國家,其間發生集體屠殺和種族清洗。另一個典型例子是在美國,立國時對本土印第安人進行集體屠殺和種族清洗,原因是小眾族群不被重視。埃及在這方面反而略有優勢,因為埃及歷史悠久,族群較統一,而傳統以來對基督徒和猶太人都可容忍。但該地區的其他國家就不一樣,伊朗、巴林、利比亞都有內部矛盾;約旦有遊牧族群和巴勒斯坦人的爭執,而敘利亞有伊斯蘭教派糾紛,伊拉克和黎巴嫩亦不穩定。以色列的民主制度及對巴勒斯坦人的高壓政策亦不能使國家平定。另一個難題是經濟因素。阿根廷進行民主選舉,左派政府上場,但因要符合IMF規定而要保障外國投資,引致經濟崩潰,五任民選總統短時間內連續倒臺,人民的資產損失了七成,對政府完全失去信心。

Grinberg教授提出,在這些中東國家,只靠民主選舉制度是不足夠的。它們的人民需要在政治上有共通的認知,互相承認對方的權利和共存的現實。這些理念需要憲法的保障,而憲制更需要通過選舉程序使之制度化,加入有代表性的代議團體。換言之,在普選之下有議席分配以確保各群體的利益可以被照顧。這一個概念和香港的功能組別議席有點近似,但涵蓋的範圍就廣闊得多,包括部族群體,宗教代表,地緣文化等。以埃及來說,如果民主改革完成,她要面對的還不止是民主的自由辯論,而是更要探討如何解決經濟體系的根本問題。

白皮貓

現時世界人口有七十億,超過一半的人口是在城市。人口繼續不斷由鄉間流向城市,估計到了2050年,城球人口會有70%是居住在城市。城市生活有極大吸引力,但對移民來說並不是每個人都可夢想成真。正如我曾讀過 Steward Brand 的一個報告所說,很多由鄉間來的移民只能住在城市貧民窟。

究竟去不去城市,這個重要抉擇困擾著不少鄉間小子。早在四十年前,Elton John 有一首名曲白皮貓 Honky Cat 就是講述這個心情。Elton John是基督徒,亦是基督教罪人,他是同性戀者,和他的伴侶David Furnish正式成婚,又找代母生了一個兒子Levon。三宗罪都有人說可以下地獄,但其實全部都被世人承認又合法。

這一首名曲音樂與歌詞俱佳。雖然由一人唱出,但內含兩個聲音,一個是說鄉間生活苦悶,需要去城市尋找出路;另一個說城市生活沒有答案,就像是:

Trying to drink whiskey from a bottle of wine.

這個聲音又說不如留在鄉下信主罷啦;但城市的誘惑實在太大,心中的真正感覺就是:
How can you stay when your heart says no;

Do not insist on English

I watched the video below recently on a TED talk by Patricia Ryan. She is an English teacher teaching English in the Gulf area, starting from Kuwait and is now in Dubai. Her story and observation are highly relevant to Hong Kong who is going through exactly the scenario she describes. She spoke perfect English slowly in the video just like your old English teacher, very easy to understand. This video can be used as a text book demonstration of English conversation.

A few decades ago, the British had a strong influence in the Gulf area. Those countries with the benefit of the oil money, were trying to catch up with the western countries. An English education was mutually beneficial. However, the English language has later on become a massive international business having a severe impact. Just like Hong Kong, the Gulf countries are not English speaking communities. Although the better educated group could have better exposure to English, the majority of the population do not. I read the news on a survey which found that the standard of English in Hong Kong as a city is only mediocre. It came as no surprise as we do not use English in our daily leisure life. Some people may use English in their work but it just stops there.

As an English teacher, Patricia Ryan is fully aware of the benefit of having a global working language, and also the desire of parents wishing their children to have a westernized education. But the insistence on English as a pre-requisite is actually harmful to the development of civilization.

First, the use of English as a preferred language has crowded out some languages. Languages come and go. A classic example is the gradual death of ancient Egyptian hieroglyph, being replaced by Greek when Alexander conquered Egypt. Nowadays, languages are dying at a faster pace. There are now 6000 different languages in the world. It is estimated that one language dies every fourteen days. There will only be 600 languages left in 90 years.

In fact, language is a reflection of how people think. Different languages represent different thought approaches to the same question. Limited number of languages will impose a boundary to our thinking process. Thus it is important that languages be preserved, not just as cultural preservation but also as a way to maintain diversified thinking.

Lastly, and most importantly, the English language requirement has become a barrier to education worldwide. This is happening in Hong Kong. If one does not pass the English language requirement, one cannot get a higher education. The English teachers become the gatekeepers. They can stop people from getting further education. English language proficiency tests pop up everywhere. They include TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC, etc. Millions of students have to take these tests before there can get into higher education. Many more just fail the language test, or are unable to afford the extra fees. There is a joke. Einstein performed poorly at school. If he needed to pass TOEFL, we would not have this genius. There are many more geniuses who excel in their favourite areas, but are nevertheless deprived of a chance because of our insistence on English as a sign of intelligence.
